Nat grew up in Winter Park, Colorado where he learned to nordic ski at a very young age. His mom collected water samples for the US Geological Survey and they would cover many miles by skiing. As he grew older his school schedule allowed him some more gravity fed activities. He started alpine racing, skiing bumps and nordic combined. He eventually picked up Telemark and backcountry skiing in Crested Butte and was around some of the very first alpine US Extreme Skiing competitions that were held in that area. He also participated in the first X Games, held in the Butte, in the skier cross event on his Telemark gear.

Shortly after that he organized the first ever Telemark big mountain competition at A-basin in the mid-1990s. He along with Shane McKonkey and Justin Patnode drafted up the rules for the Telemark big mountain events based off the IFSA rules that were being used at the time. He continued putting on big mountain events through the mid-2000s in addition to adding other events like slopestyle, big air and Telecross. He produced such Telemark movies as Laying It Down, Bliss, and the Total Telemark Series. His movie tours crisscrossed the country and mixed in events, athlete promotion, and demos to help raise awareness of Telemark skiing to the masses.
