The Freeheel Life Podcast

Apr 19, 2021

Susie Sutphin grew up in Ohio. After high school she moved west to the Rocky Mountains to teach skiing at Keystone in Colorado. It was there that she was introduced to Telemark skiing. During her time in Summit County Colorado she witnessed classic events like the Breckenridge Bump Buffet, Telemark racing, and the emergence of a new surge of Telemark skiers pushing the limits of what was possible on freeheel gear.

Susie began selling advertising for Couloir Magazine and eventually moved to Truckee, California to work at the Couloir offices. It was during this time that she pitched the idea of a Telemark specific ski magazine to then Couloir Publisher Craig Dostie. Despite his initial lackluster response, she pursued the idea and was able to bring to life Telemark Skier magazine as an additional title under Couloir’s publishing in 2003.

After her time at Telemark Skier magazine and Couloir, she moved onto work for Patagonia in their athlete and events department. But it was her love of the mountains that led her back to Tahoe to help run the Wild and Scenic Environmental Film Festival tour before venturing into starting and running the Tahoe Food Hub in 2012 that she continues to run today.
